At a recent meeting of the Metro West Conference Executive Committee, the conference voted to add Orono High School to its membership beginning fall 2021. New Prague High School and Waconia High School were also admitted, and will join current members Benilde St. Margaret’s, Bloomington Jefferson, Bloomington Kennedy, Chanhassen, Chaska, Robbinsdale Cooper and St. Louis Park. Orono High School is currently a member of the Wright County Conference.

“We will be leaving one phenomenal conference for another,” said Bucky Mieras, Athletic Director at Orono High School. “We can’t thank the Wright County Conference and its member schools enough for their support and opportunities to improve our programming over the years. We look forward to maintaining those relationships during the transition period and beyond.”

The Orono Schools Co-Curricular Committee met earlier this year and approved seeking membership in the Metro West conference, with further backing from administration, staff, coaches and community stakeholders. Membership will allow for consistent and optimal scheduling that will better accommodate all levels of participation. “This move will positively impact full curricular programming,” said Mieras, “including students in band, choir, speech, fine arts, academics, athletics and more.”

Mieras added that the location of Metro West schools and facilities will ease transportation time for Orono students and their families who eagerly engage as spectators. “We owe a great deal of thanks to the Orono Schools community that has supported our new facilities, making this a perfect time to take advantage of a better fit and potential to expand programming for our students.”

The one-year lead time will give the Metro West Conference a chance to partner with new member schools as they plan for this period of growth. Superintendent Dr. Karen Orcutt said, “We look forward to these new partnerships and possibilities for Orono students through a full complement of arts, activities and athletics.”
