Alex Townsend has been selected to lead the Orono Schools Technology Department as the district’s new Technology Coordinator. He replaces Penny Pease, who retired in November.
Townsend was most recently employed as Digital Resource Coordinator in Eden Prairie Public Schools. During his three years in that role, his accomplishments included building an online school for high school students, designing professional development opportunities for staff members and evaluating the effectiveness of instruction and programs by using a variety of metrics.
Prior to joining Eden Prairie, Townsend was an elementary classroom teacher in Hopkins for five years, as well as an instructional and special education paraprofessional in that district. He holds a bachelor’s of science degree in elementary education from Augsburg University and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Minnesota. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in learning technologies at the U of M.
“We are energized in welcoming Alex to our team,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen Orcutt, “and look forward to his leadership in bringing our technology – both instructional and operational – to a new level of excellence.
“Through his work in Eden Prairie, and his background as a classroom teacher, Alex will expand our faculty’s knowledge of the best instructional practices. His pursuit of advanced degrees as an individual complements our commitment as an organization to continuously improve,” she added.
“I am excited about the opportunity to be part of the Orono School District,” said Townsend. “My previous experiences have provided me with many opportunities to grow my skill set as a leader and innovator,” he added. “In my professional career, I have been able to work collaboratively with various stakeholders to solve the complex problems of education and technology.”
Townsend and his wife, Becky, a special education teacher at Orono Intermediate School, have a daughter, Campbell, 4 months, and dogs Harper and Finnegan. He enjoys spending time outdoors, working on house projects and traveling to the family cabin.
