Orono High School senior Serena Laing (Class of 2018) is one of 53 Minnesota high school students honored as Scholars of Distinction by the Minnesota Department of Education.
Laing was recognized for meritorious performance in the science category. Her project was “Investigation of Porphyromonas Gingivalis Isotypes in Relation to Various Clinical Factors.”
In addition to science, the program highlights student achievement in the categories of STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Mathematics), mathematics, social studies, leadership and theater arts.
To earn recognition, a student must complete required work in Minnesota’s academic standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter and apply their knowledge and skills on a challenging project. Experts in each category read and score applications.
Students are awarded a medal and certificate. The awards ceremony was held May 12 at the Perpich Center for Arts Education in Golden Valley.
