Six Orono High School Speech Team members broke into the highly-competitive championship round during the Minnesota State High School League state speech tournament April 20 at Apple Valley High School. It was the most OHS students ever to achieve that level; an accomplishment made even more impressive considering OHS was one of the smallest high schools in the Class AA competition.

The students are:

  • Andy Baran – fourth place, original oratory
  • Alex Berger – fourth place, extemporaneous speaking
  • Natalie Cumming – fourth place, serious prose
  • Oscar Edwards-Hughes and Carolyn Fritz – sixth place, duo interpretation
  • Tavo Moline – eighth place, creative expression

Also competing at state were Ashley Clemens (creative expression), Jillian Dore (storytelling) and Lexi Ostvig (serious drama).

The team is coached by OHS English teacher Julie McMerty and Barb Shofner.
