The Orono High School Speech Team has been recognized nationally by the National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA).
The team received at least 200 degrees or last year, placing it in the top 8 percent of chapters nationwide and securing membership in the league’s prestigious 200 Club. Students earn points and degrees based on competitive and service-related activities.
“This milestone is remarkable because it demonstrates outstanding commitment to teaching students essential life skills, including communication, research, listening, writing and organization,” wrote J. Scott Wunn, NSDA executive director, in his letter of congratulations.
The OHS Speech Team enjoyed a very successful season last school year, winning its sixth consecutive Wright County Conference championship, and advancing nine students to state competition.
The National Speech & Debate Association is the nation’s oldest and largest forensic honor society and is widely regarded as the highest standard of excellence in secondary school speech and debate. NSDA has 120,000 members nationwide.
The advisor of the speech team is Julie McMerty, OHS English teacher.
