Student journalists from Orono High School recently attended the Minnesota High School Press Association state convention at the University of Minnesota. They returned to school informed, inspired and with a number of awards.

The Spartan Annual yearbook received an All-State Gold Award in recognition of excellent writing, editing, photography and design. It also received second place for the Best of Show Award.

Individual yearbook honors went to Maggie Brick, Madison Michel and Callum Yockey with first and second places in yearbook theme/concept package.

The Spartan Speaks newspaper was awarded fifth place for Best in Show for its publication website. Individual honors went to:

  • Nikki Praus, first place, sports photo
  • Vivian Rohrer, sixth place, sports story
  • Cari Spencer, sixth place, editorial/opinion
  • Kate Edwards and Cami Reese, 10th place, page one design

At the convention, students heard a keynote by Linda Puntney, former executive director of the Journalism Education Association, who inspired them about their value in their schools. They also attended three breakout sessions about photography, trends, editorial leadership, journalism ethics and staff morale.

Advisors are OHS language arts teachers Sarah Cole (yearbook) and Kyle Ann Herring (newspaper).
