We’re building excitement! Learn about the Indoor Activities Center Core Planning Group
Five of the 10 teams that Orono Middle School advanced from building-level competition placed in the World Savvy Festival. The regional competition was held May 12 at the University of St. Thomas. In all, more than 300 students representing eight schools participated.
The World Savvy Challenge is an academic opportunity for students to engage in inquiry around a global theme and take action to address 21st Century challenges. All eighth-graders participated in research a global issue, developing solutions and an action plan around the theme of “Population and Progress.”
Three projects earned first places:
Project Planet, a website, earned second place. Students working on it were Ella Nordlie and Elise Robin.
Bee Award, also a website, came in third place. Students working on it were Sophia Gunderson, Mary Peterson, Elle Pfeiffer and Marin Reder.
Judging consisted of a 10-minute period during which judges analyzed students’ websites, exhibits or presentation. During that time, judges could ask clarifying questions. Then there was a dedicated period of about 5 minutes in which judges asked specific questions and made comments to a team. Finally, there was a 5-minute period that judges used to score a project. Students were evaluated on content, skills, final presentation, bibliography and knowledge-to-action project.
