OMS earns National Math Olympiad honors

The Orono Middle School Math Olympiad team was named to the National Math Olympiad Honor Roll for scoring in the top 10 percent of teams internationally.

All 30 students participating received awards for excellence, placing within the top half of the 150,000 students worldwide competing. In addition to the United States, 23 foreign countries were represented.

Zara Coakley placed among the top 2 percent of all students. Nine students were among the top 10 percent:  Alex Davis, Will Fritz, Eli Hamer, Joseph Kasner, Charlie Kraus, Colin Parker, Riley Snow, Olivia Tate and Caleb Vaughan.

The competition consists of five monthly contests between November and March.

OMS math teacher Sara Hunstiger is the team’s coach.
