OHS enjoys successful week in competitions

It was a great weekend of competition for Orono High School!

Boys’ Swimming and Diving

(March 2-4 at U of M‘s Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center, Minneapolis)

OHS has two state champions:

  • Will Brenton won the 100-yard backstroke; and
  • Will Brenton, Peter Sherek, Sig Muller and Andy Kileen won the 200-yard medley relay PLUS set a new Class A state record.

The team came in third, which is believed to be the best finish for the boys’ team in OHS history.

Spartans who turned in All-State performances (among top eight finishers) are, in alphabetical order, Will Brenton, Harrison Graham, Peter Kasner, Andy Kileen, Sig Muller, Brendon Prentice and Peter Sherek.

Alex Schrock made it to the diving finals and finished 15th overall.

Wrestling

(March 2-4 at Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul)

Bobby Striggow reached the state championship finals, where Jared Florell of Totino-Grace won by a 7-3 decision.

Henry Beck, Danny Striggow and Lucas van Dyck also wrestled at state.

Speech

(March 2 at Orono High School)

For the sixth consecutive year, the OHS Speech Team won the Wright County Conference championship on Thursday.

OHS earned lots of first places:

  • Jesse Bissen, drama
  • Natalie Cumming, poetry
  • Andy Baran, discussion
  • Alex Berger, extemporaneous speaking
  • Lainie Henderson, prose
  • Shane Hewitt, great speeches
  • Carolyn Fritz and Oscar Edwards Hughes, dramatic duo
  • Tavo Moline and Nate Schultz, tied for first place in humor
  • Natalie Bever and Hannah Clink, tied for first place in informative
  • McKenzie Pearson and Hannah Rose Harbison, tied for first place in original oratory

Prior to Orono’s current streak, Dassel-Cokato won the Wright County Conference speech championship 12 consecutive times.
