Orono’s Destination Imagination (DI) teams competed in a regional tournament on February 18 at Maple Grove High School. Twenty second-, third- and fourth-grade students completed different challenges that required creative thinking, critical thinking and collaborative problem solving. The second-grade team, “DI Champs!” did the Scientific Challenge and finished 10th out of 11th. The third/fourth-grade team, “The Imaginators,” took second place in the Regional Tournament, which qualifies them for State Competition in April and a chance to attend Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee. The fourth-grade all-girls team, the “Orono Voyagers,” placed third with four teams competing. Their biggest success came during the improv central challenge when they had a one point difference with first place team. All three teams have spent months preparing for the regional tournament under the guidance of parent team managers!
Destination Imagination is an Orono Community Education program open to students in Kindergarten – 12th grade. DI is designed to inspire students to use creativity in working through challenges. Registration for the 2017-18 season for Orono teams will open in late August.
