Orono Schools participated in the ME to WE initiative, WE Scare Hunger Food Drive for the 4th year. From October 31 – November 3, students in grades K – 12, as well as parents, brought in non-perishable food items to school for donation to the Maple Plain Food Shelf. In addition, we partnered with several local businesses during the week. Harvest Moon, Orono Station, and the ChiroCenter in Long Lake all partnered with us to collect donations from their customers. Members of the High School club, Youth in Action, also went to Harvest Moon and Orono Station to spread the word about WE Scare Hunger and ask for donations on Wednesday afternoon.
On Friday, November 4th, several Youth in Action students and Community Education staff members helped pack up the donations to bring to the Maple Plain Food Shelf. After weighing all of the donations, we ended up collecting an astounding 1,377 pounds of food, which exceeded last year’s donation amount by more than 50 pounds!
