MAS honors research paper of OHS students

mn-academy-of-scienceOrono High School senior Elise Anhorn and junior Serena Laing received an honorable mention in the 2017 Minnesota Academy of Science STEM Communicator Awards. Their research paper was entitled “Investigation of Porphyromonas Gingivalis Isotypes in Relation to Various Clinical Factors.”

The competition honors authors of the top 10 papers with cash awards and medallions, and also recognizes 10 papers with honorable mentions. This is the first year Orono High School students participated in the competition.

The Minnesota Academy of Science MAS) created the competition in 2013 to focus on written communication skills among young scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. “In recent years, the gap in understanding between scientists and the public has become evident in highly polarized controversies such as climate change, stem cell research and animal experimentation,” explains MAS. “There is a sense in our society that increasing the quality of discourse on these issues requires more than just increasing science skills among the general public; we also need to improve communication skills within the scientific community.”

The statewide competition identifies students having:

  • A substantive base of scientific knowledge exceeding usual high school science requirements;
  • A record of effective use of scientific methods to advance research in a chosen area of science or mathematics, with demonstrated skills of clear and concise data analysis;
  • An ability to think critically, synthesize information and argue the merits of conclusions; and
  • A record of personal growth as well as recognition of how their research has an impact upon others.

MAS recruits scientists and educators of appropriate expertise and stature to evaluate the papers submitted.


Orono Public Schools
